The second showcase, “He Who Laughs Last,” explores the roots of the Penguin’s childhood traumas while shifting gears between his adult interpersonal relationships and the pathos behind both. Jason Aaron does a fine job of giving some dimension and sympathy to Oswald Cobblepot by showing us how he, too, has been hurt--and while his reactions aren’t necessarily socially acceptable, the Penguin does have a fragile human side to him.
